Kids Jiu Jitsu

What to do when a fight ends up on the ground.

Most scuffles between kids end up on the ground. Jiu jitsu is the part of the curriculum that deals with exactly that: how to stay calm, control the situation, escape, and get back to your feet. It uses leverage rather than strikes, which is what makes it the safest way for a child to train at full effort against a resisting partner.

What you will learn

In this class.

Escapes

How to get out from underneath someone bigger, off the wall, or out of a hold, without panicking.

Positional control

Staying safe on the ground and controlling where a struggle goes, which is how you end a problem without hurting anyone.

Leverage over strength

Angles, frames and body mechanics that let a smaller person neutralize a larger one.

Composure under pressure

Live training against a partner who is genuinely resisting. Kids learn to think while uncomfortable, which is the skill that transfers furthest off the mat.

A typical class

What to expect.

Warm-up and movement drills, technique of the day, then positional rounds where students work the technique against light resistance. No striking, so students can train hard without taking damage.

Your first class is free. Wear comfortable athletic clothes, bring water, and arrive a few minutes early so we can show you around.

Questions

About Kids Jiu Jitsu.

Is jiu jitsu safe for kids?

It is one of the safest martial arts for children precisely because there is no striking. Training is supervised, partners are matched by size and experience, and intensity is controlled.

Does my child need to do kung fu too?

No, jiu jitsu can be trained on its own. That said, many families do both, because Shou Shu covers standing self-defense and jiu jitsu covers the ground. Together they cover the whole fight.

What should they wear?

Athletic clothes without zippers or pockets for the first class. We will talk about a gi if your child continues.
